CHARTERED BANK OF INDIA, AUSTRALIA & CHINA.
The Honourable
The Colonial Secretary,
Hong Kong.
167
Hong Kong, 17th January, 1927.
Sir,
In reply to your communication of 15th instant,
I have to inform you that the statement to which you refer, first appeared in Japan as part of insidious propaganda against British Imperialism. Our Head Office in London authorised us by cable on 27th November to give an emphatic denial to the statement which was absolutely without foundation and the Consul General in Canton was duly informed
at the time.
You will see from the recent Shanghai Chamber of Commerce journal that the Chairman called upon a Shanghai News Agency which had gratuitously copied the Report, to have the fairness to print an absolute refutation of the Statement which after communication by cable with the Bank and firm mentioned, he was in a position to deny emphatically.
(Sd.)
I have, &c.,
A. H. Ferguson,
Manager.
